You can see the extraordinary church tower of Castelrotto from afar. No wonder: it is 82 metres high and one of the highest church towers in South Tyrol. But it’s not just its height that makes the Castelrotto church tower so special. The tower is structurally separate from the church and stands in front of the main façade of the church building. This is more common in Veneto, but in South Tyrol this distance is a rarity. This separation is due to the devastating fire on 24 May 1753, when the old Gothic church tower was badly damaged and had to be rebuilt. The plans for this were drawn up by master bricklayer Simon Rieder from Brixen. The construction work took around 25 years, with some interruptions. The new tower was completed in 1780.
Villages used to try to outdo each other in the size and volume of their church bells. The bells of the church in Castelrotto ring particularly beautifully. The people of Castelrotto are just as proud of this as they are of their tower. Today there are nine bells in the church tower of Castelrotto, which were inaugurated in 1922.
The church tower was renovated in 2007. Curious to see what it looks like inside? Then you can take part in a tour. You will learn interesting details about the church tower and its history. If you want, you can climb the 298 steps to the top of the church tower and enjoy the wonderful view over the village.
