Fancy travelling back in time? The Oswald von Wolkenstein Ride invites you to gallop through the Middle Ages for three days. The horse show is dedicated to the minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein, who was born in 1367 at Trostburg Castle above Waidbruck. It is now the largest and most spectacular equestrian event in South Tyrol.
The Oswald von Wolkenstein Ride consists of four tournament games: the ring jump, the labyrinth, the obstacle gallop and the gate ride. At all four stages, the riders have to prove their skill, speed and teamwork. The ranking can change after each competition. Victory is often decided by less than a second. The winners are only decided at the end. Their prize? The coveted standard, which remains in the possession of the winning team until the following year.
The tournament matches take place at the most beautiful locations in the Sciliar area. The start is at the Trostburg in Waidbruck. On the “Kofl” in Castelrotto, the ring game is on the programme. The second tournament game, the labyrinth, is held at Matzlbödele in Seis. At the Völser Weiher pond, the riders show off their skills in the obstacle gallop. The last and perhaps decisive game is the gate ride on the meadows near Prösels Castle. A shuttle bus will take visitors from venue to venue.
The Oswald von Wolkenstein Ride takes place every year on a Sunday between the end of May and mid-June. There are celebrations on the Friday and Saturday beforehand. The opening parade with the equestrian teams, bands, flag-wavers, theatre people, knights and jugglers in traditional costumes, floats and horse-drawn carriages is particularly worth seeing.
