The historically re-enacted peasant wedding from the 19th century takes place every year at the end of January in Castelrotto. Why in the cold season? In the past, people usually got married in winter, as they had to work on the farm and in the fields in spring and summer.
Magnificently decorated horse-drawn sleighs travel from the hamlet of St. Valentin through the snow-covered landscape to Castelrotto at the Castelrotto farmers’ wedding. The wedding procession is accompanied by couples in traditional costumes and a band. In the village centre, the wedding party presents itself to the spectators and then moves on to a hotel to enjoy the “Hoazetkuchl”, the wedding feast. Thanks to the many participants who proudly wear the old traditional costumes, the Kastelruther Bauernhochzeit has developed into one of the most beautiful traditional costume shows in South Tyrol.
The supporting programme invites you to a wedding reception the day before, to enjoy traditional specialities in the village square and to visit the traditional costume museum in Castelrotto.
