The “Kofl”, also known as the Calvary, is a hill in the north-west of Castelrotto. It is no coincidence that the Kofl has a nickname that recalls the Passion of Jesus Christ on Mount Golgotha: several chapels line the path from the village up to the Kofl. Almost life-size wooden figures at the stations bring the events of that time back to life: Jesus’ farewell to his mother, the Mount of Olives, the scourging, washing of hands and crowning with thorns, the carrying of the cross and the burial. Once at the top, you have a magnificent view over Castelrotto as far as the Sciliar and the villages of Tesimo and San Michele.
The origins of the village of Kastelruth can also be found at the chapel of St Anthony on the Kofel: the remains of the walls of the “Castellum ruptum”, the ruined castle. The name Castelrotto is derived from the “Castellum ruptum”.
The “Kegelplatz” at Kofl is reminiscent of a legend that tells of extraordinary events. A mighty knight’s castle is said to have once stood here. The knights enjoyed themselves in skittles tournaments, with the skittles made of pure gold and the balls of pure silver.
Today, a completely different kind of fun takes place at the Kofl: the Krausentafel, whose name derives from the noble Kraus family. In July, a high-quality menu is served at festively laid tables around the anniversary fountain.
